Location and attractions in the surroundings
The cottage is located only 200 metres from the hiking trail to the Magurka hill (1 107 m above sea level), which provides an unusual view of the Orava Dam, Upper Orava and the surrounding mountains. Magurka is very easily recognizable thanks to the 80-metre high tower on the top, which serves as a television transmitter.
Another attraction in the vicinity is the "Rio de Klin" (7km from the cottage), it is the highest statue of Christ in Slovakia (a copy of the statue from Rio de Janeiro), which has a height of 9.5 meters and is located on the Grapa hill at an altitude of 686 m above sea level, from where there is a beautiful view of the Orava dam and the Roháče Mountains.
For lovers of hiking we recommend a more demanding climb to Babia hora (1723 m above sea level), a hiking trail leads to it from Orava Polhora (18 km from the cottage). Babia hora is the northernmost vantage point in Slovakia and the highest peak of the Orava Beskydy Mountains. On the way to this hill you can also visit the famous Hviezdoslav's mountain.
In summer, you can try various water sports such as canoeing, paddle boarding or pedal boating at the Orava Dam. In winter you can ski in Ski Krušetnica (11km), Orava Snow Oravská Lesná (27km) or Ski Park Kubínska hoľa (35km).
The nearest well-established aquaparks are in Oravice (Meander Thermal Oravice), 34km from the chalet, and the aquapark in the Polish village of Chocholow (Aquapark Chocholowskie Termy), 37km from the chalet.
We also recommend to visit
We also recommend a visit to the picturesque Slanický island of art, which is a remnant of the flooded village of Slanica, which disappeared under the water of the Orava dam and only the hill with the Baroque church has been preserved. On this island you can learn about the history of the Orava Dam and the flooded villages and also see the expositions of traditional folk art. The boat to this island runs from May to September, the harbour is located 2km from the cottage.
If you have enough time, don't miss a visit to Orava Castle (23km), which dates back to the 13th century and is one of the most beautiful (and scariest) castles in Slovakia, where the 1922 German classic silent horror film Nosferatu, the first Dracula movie, was filmed.
